Senior goaltender David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) backboned a stingy defensive effort and senior David Cayer (Lonqueuil, QUE) and junior Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) provided timely goals as the Clarkson University Hockey team recorded its first win in NCAA Tournament play in 11 years by defeating St. Cloud State 2-1 n the first round of the East Regional on Friday evening.
The Golden Knights, who snapped a four-game losing streak in the national playoffs with the one-goal victory over the Huskies at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY, improved their record to 22-12-4. Clarkson will face the winner of Michigan/Niagara in Saturday’s East Regional Championship, which begins at 7:00 pm.
After a scoreless first period, St. Cloud (19-16-5) took the opening lead early in the second frame on a goal by Garrett Raboin at 4:08. The Knights answered back late in the period to make it a 1-1.
Cayer took a pass from freshman defenseman Bryan Rufenach (Cameron, ONT) and fired a shot through traffic that deflected off a stick in front, and up and over St.Cloud’s goaltender Jase Weslosky, snapping a lengthy scoring drought in NCAA play for the Green and Gold. Cayer’s 10th goal of the season at 14:15 of the second was Clarkson’s first goal in tournament action in 125:03. Junior defenseman Tyrell Mason (Dawson Creek, BC) also assisted on the tying goal.
An outstanding effort by Guthrie lifted the Knights to their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1996. At 4:58 of the third, Guthrie took a pass from senior defenseman Grant Clitsome (Gloucester, ONT), skated past a St. Cloud defenseman and flipped in a backhand shot. Five of Guthrie’s goals this season have been game-winners.
Clarkson played a strong game along the broads and out shot the Huskies 40-25. The Knights were especially strong on the penalty kill, shutting down St. Cloud’s potent power play on all six of its man-advantage chances.
Leggio posted 24 saves, including 11 in the scoreless first period, to improve his career record to 59-28-12.

Ranked fifth in the national polls, the Knights own a 25-8-5 overall record. Clarkson will find out which regional it will play in when the 16-team NCAA Tournament is announced on Sunday afternoon. The NCAA selection show will be televised on ESPN-2 in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m.
2007 ECACHL Tournament Most Outstanding Player, sophomore Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) led the Clarkson comeback against Quinnipiac with one goal and two assists.
Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutes of play, D’Alvise jump started the Knights rally in the third, scoring his second goal of the weekend and 16th of the year just 1:43 into the final frame. D’Alvise knocked in a loose puck at the side of the goal after strong work behind the net by sophomore Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT).
The Knights then went on top with a pair of goals 50 seconds apart by sophomore defenseman Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) and senior Brodie Rutherglen (Trail, BC) midway through the stanza.
Paquet tied the game 2-2 at 12:30 when he jumped into the play from the blueline and finished off passes from juniors Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) and Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY), lifting in his third goal of the over the sprawling Bobcat goaltender, Bud Fisher.
At 13:20, the Green and Gold took the lead when Rutherglen took a pass in the slot from D’Alvise and beat Fisher with a quick shot wrist shot for his eighth goal of the season.
Weller, who joined D’Alvise on the All-Tournament Team, sealed Clarkson’s first ECACHL Tournament Championship since 1999 when he scored into an empty net with 56 seconds remaining.

Clarkson Advances to ECAC Tourney Final
Labels: SportsA thrilling finish in the final 41 seconds lifted the Clarkson University Hockey team to a 5-4 victory over Dartmouth on Friday in the semifinal round of the ECAC Hockey League Tournament and into the league’s title game for the 13th time in the storied program's history.
Ranked fifth in the nation, the Golden Knights will battle Quinnipiac in Saturday’s championship game, starting at 8:07 p.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY.
The Bobcats shut out regular season champion St. Lawrence, 4-0, in the other semifinal contest on Friday. The championship game will be broadcast live by CSTV.
Junior Steve Zalewski (New Hartford, NY) capped off the most exciting game of the season for Clarkson, scoring the winning goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation. Zalewski took a pass off the boards from classmate Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) and ripped a shot from the left wing that beat Big Green goaltender Mike Devine over the shoulder for his 16th goal of the season, sending the partisan Clarkson crowd of 4,484 into frenzy. Senior defenseman Michael Grenzy (Lockport, NY) also assisted.
The Knights, who own an 18-0-2 record when leading after the second period, were outscored by Dartmouth 3-2 in the final stanza, setting the tone for the exciting finish.
Clarkson displayed its resiliency throughout the contest. Three times, the Green and Gold quickly responded after Dartmouth scored to prevent the Big Green from building any momentum.
Weller opened the scoring 8:28 into the game with his 18th goal of the season. Weller took a pass at the side of the net from junior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) and knocked in his own rebound for his ninth power-play marker of the year. Junior Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) also assisted.
Dartmouth opened the second, scoring at 8:48 to tie the game, but the Knights answered right back just 36 seconds later to regain the lead. Clarkson’s captain, Dodge scored his 18th goal of the season and 98th career point with assists going to senior Mike Sullivan (Stouffville, ONT) and junior defenseman Grant Clitsome (Gloucester, ONT).
Clarkson’s fourth line connected late in the second to give the Knights’ a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Mike Willemsen (Stittsville, ONT) scored his first goal of the season at 15:39, finishing off a perfect feed in front from classmate Dan Tuttle (Augusta, ME). Senior Max Kolu (Turku, Finland) also assisted.
The Big Green began their third-period rally at 3:38, with Grant Lewis scoring Dartmouth’s second goal. Once again, however, the Knights answered right back with sophomore Chris D’Alvise’s (Mississauga, ONT) goal just 77 seconds later to make it 4-2. D’Alvise deked Devine out of position with a move in front and slid in his 15th goal of the season, finishing off passes from classmate Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) and freshman Tim Marks (Brownville, NY).
Dartmouth came right back at 6:16 with T.J. Galiardi’s power-play goal, and then tied it 4-4 with J.T. Wyman scoring at 18:20.
Both teams had 29 shots on goal. Junior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY), the ECACHL’s Goaltender of the Year, finished with 25 saves for the Knights.
Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play, while the Big Green were 1-of-3 with the man advantage.

The second seed in the ECACHL playoffs, Clarkson swept defending tournament champion Harvard last weekend at Cheel Arena, working past the seventh-seeded Crimson, 3-0 and 2-1. Junior goaltender David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) was at the top of his game to start the playoffs, combining for 64 saves on 65 shots and allowing just one power-play goal in the quarterfinal-round sweep of Harvard. He posted 27 saves, including 18 in the second period, in Friday’s win for his second shutout of the season and the Crimson’s first blanking in 86 games. He followed on Saturday with 37 saves, including a penalty-shot stop.
Led by junior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) and senior assistant captain Matt Curley (Madrid, NY), the Knights have won three straight and are 7-1-1 in their last nine games. Ranked 5th in the national polls, the Green and Gold own a 23-8-5 overall record, their most victories since the 1998-99 campaign when they posted 25 en route to the program’s last ECACHL championship.
Clarkson closed out the 2006-07 ECACHL campaign tied for first, along with Quinnipiac, in goals per game (3.36) in the conference, and first in defense, allowing only 2.41 goals per game in league play. The Knights also ranked high in specialty teams play during conference action. Clarkson owned both the second-rated power-play (21%) and penalty kill (88.4%) in the ECACHL.
Featuring four players scoring 32 points or more overall, the Knights are sixth in the nation in scoring (3.53 GPG). Dodge paces the balanced Clarkson offense with 37 points on 17 goals and 20 assists. The Knights’ power-play, which has connected for at least one man-advantage goal in each of the last 12 games, is ranked third in the Division I, clicking at 22.8% (51-224). Leggio backbones Clarkson’s defensive effort with a .931 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average.
Clarkson has been a power in the ECACHL since the league was formed at the start of the 1961-62 season. The Knights, who have participated in 45 of the conference’s 46 postseason tournaments, have won four league championships (1966, 1991, 1993, 1999). Clarkson owns a 77-57-5 record in the ECACHL playoffs, including a 12-18 mark in the semifinals. The Knights have advanced to 30 league championship tournaments with their last appearance coming in 2004 when they skated all the way to the title game as the number nine seed before losing to Harvard, 4-2.
A tournament veteran having played in the last four semifinal rounds, the Big Green of Dartmouth are striving to advance the ECACHL championship game for the first time during 10th-year head coach Bob Gaudet’s tenure. Dartmouth has played in two titles games, finishing as the runner-up in 1979 and 1980. Last year, Dartmouth lost to Harvard, 10-1 in the semifinals. The Big Green enter the 2007 tourney on a tear, having won six straight and nine of their last 10. In quarterfinal-round action at Thompson Arena in Hanover, NH, third-seeded Dartmouth overwhelmed sixth seed Princeton 6-2 on Friday and then edged the Tigers 3-2 on Saturday. The Big Green are ranked 14th in the country and own an 18-10-3 overall record and finished third in the league with a 12-7-3 ECACHL mark.
The surprise team in the conference this season, St. Lawrence University, picked to finish sixth in the standings, skated its way to the regular season title with a 16-5-1 league mark, finishing three points in front of Clarkson. Guided by 22nd-year head coach Joe Marsh, the Saints are ranked 10th in the country and own a 22-12-2 overall record. St. Lawrence has won eight of its last nine games, including an impressive sweep of eighth-seeded Colgate in the quarterfinal round at Appleton Arena in Canton. The Saints posted 6-1 and 5-1 victories over the Raiders to advance to the semifinal round for the first time since 2001 when the team won its sixth ECACHL Tournament championship.
Playing in only its second season in the ECACHL, Quinnipiac University has certainly made itself noticed in the conference. The Bobcats, guided by 13th-year head coach Rand Pecknold, finished tied for fourth in the standings with a 10-8-4 league slate, and have gone 4-0 in the playoffs. After defeating Union (3-1, 5-4 ot) in first round action at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, CT on March 2-3, Quinnipiac skated into Ithaca, NY this past weekend and swept perennial ECACHL powerhouse Cornell at Lynah Rink, winning 1-0 in overtime and 3-2. The Bobcats own a 20-13-5 overall record and are ranked 18th in the nation.
