Spock's Beard

. Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Spock's Beard is one of my favorite bands. I stumbled upon them accidentally several years ago via the internet. I was (and still am) really into Marillion and found a web site that said they also really liked Spock's Beard. So I bought their first cd The Light and I really liked it. I've bought every studio album they've produced since. Spock's Beard is famous for using and creating strange instruments in their music. Octane is their eighth and latest album (Octane - 8 - get it???). They use a violin bow on a hand saw in one song. Here is a snippet of one song called The Planet's Hum.

Had to comment here . . . I found your blog from the link on 'PoppinsPonderings' (I'm an old friend of that blog's author, from many years ago when I lived in Utica, NY, where I grew up). I too am a big fan of Marillion, Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, and many other prog rock bands. Some other bands you should also check out (you've probably heard of some of these): Arena (drummer is Mick Pointer, the original Marillion drummer), Pendragon (keyboardist Clive Nolan, also from Arena), IQ (bassist has played with Arena), Liquid Tension Experiment (drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist Steve Petrucci from Dream Theater, plus Tony Levin on bass), Transatlantic (Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas, Roine Stolt), the list goes on and on. There has been quite a renaissance in progressive rock over the past several years.

I've heard of Arena too but haven't heard any of their music. Never heard of Pendragon or IQ. I have Liquid Tension Experiment 2 on cd. I've asked for some Transatlantic cds for X-mas birthday gifts but never got them. Must have been a bad bunny. Thanks for stopping in!
