A Trip to the Playground

. Saturday, June 10, 2006

UPDATE:

The playground below was recently replaced. We had never gone to the old one because it was in pretty poor condition. I really like the playground except for one thing - it's proximity to the water. The playground is on a little peninsula that sticks out into the water and is surrounded by water on three sides. It would take only a moment's inattention for a kid to fall into the water and drown. That would be quite easy given all of the ducks, geese, and other wildlife that live near the water's edge. My wife was at the playground earlier in the week and was horrified at the site of a half dozen kids running around the playground while the mothers are on the other side of the playground kibitzing with each other. It take only a second for a small child to slip down the embankment, out of sight, and into the water. It was only a short time ago when two young teens drowned in the Swift Creek reservoir while canoeing without wearing life jackets.

Even though it was quite scenic at the playground, I feel it was a poor choice to locate it there. We'll still continue to bring Boo Jr to the playground, but we are extra-special vigilant keeping an eye on him and keeping him away from the water's edge.

Parents need to do a better job keeping their kids away from the wildlife too. The ducks and geese are cute and all but will also bite if they feel threatened. I feel sorry for the animals as hoards of kids chase after them while all they were trying to do was take a nap.

These are pictures from this afternoon's trip to the community playground. There are lot of geese, ducks, and turtles nearby because of the nearby reservoir.

Looks like a nice place for kids to go and have fun. I like it when nature is still part of the playground! The little guy is so cute. :)
