Maymont

. Friday, October 20, 2006

Maymont is one of Richmond's prized possessions. There's much to do there. There are historic houses, gardens, and more I've only been to a small portion of it - the part with all the animals. I plan on taking Boo Jr there this afternoon. We brought him there once before when he was much younger. Now that he's older, I think he'd really like seeing the fish and the river otters.

I'm not sure if they got new bears to replace the old ones that got put down about a year ago. The bears were put down because an inattentive mother didn't notice that her toddler son had climbed the "people" fence and stuck his hand through the "animal" fence and got bit. The park officials think the bear thought the boy had food in his hand. The two bears were put down because of the risk of rabies (they didn't know which bear bit the boy). They tested the bears and neither one had rabbies. It was a big brewhaha here in Richmond last year.

My son's preschool recently had a petting zoo come to their school so he's been talking a lot about animals lately. So we'll grab some lunch in a bit and then head over to Maymont. I'll take plenty of pictures to share with everyone in a future post.

Wow! You weren't kiddin' about Maymont being beautiful! It looks like a place I'd like to see.

Did my people own it at one time, or did you guys build it?
