Self Service Checkouts

. Saturday, May 06, 2006

I really like using the self service checkouts in most stores. A great majority of the time, there is no one in line so I can get in and out in a jiffy. Ukrops has one of the best ones. Walmart's isn't too bad either (although lately, the credit card portion has been busted and are marked "cash only"). I really don't like the self service checkout at Krogers. If the amount is less than $10, you don't have to sign. If it's over $10, a receipt prints out at the cashier's terminal and you have to go and manually sign it there. Stupid. Why bother with a self serve checkout?

One of my pet peeves is people using self service checkouts who are not "technically" literate. They pause five seconds after scanning each item to make sure it scanned. Just scan it and bag it, man! I also hate people who go through those lines with lots of produce. These people usually see me waiting in line and tell me how "sorry" they are and how "difficult" it is to use these "new-fangled" machines. After waiting in line for five minutes for this one guy, I zipped right through after him. The guy behind me said, "You've used one of these before, haven't you?" Another thing I hate is people fishing through their pocketbook looking for exact change. If you're gonna do that, take your ass to the regular checkout line. Self serve checkout lines are for people like me who want to be in and out in a hurry.

One thing I wish you could do is ring up multiple items at the same time. If I've got eight of a particular item, why can't I go (8) at {scan item} and put the eight items in the bag. The scanner lets you go only so fast so it seems to take forever when ringing up multiple items.

Ok - that's enough bitching for now!

Remind me never to get in line ahead of you Boo! I am pretty good at the self serve checkout. Our local Kmart removed them, probably for lack of business, now when I go there I have to wait in line with all the other people. Usually they only have 2 cashiers open. Ugh. Well Kmart shoppers my butt.

Produce is OK only if you know what you're doing. Some people don't know the name of the item they're buying and look like a deer in the headlights.

I love the self serve registers. I never go through a line with a cashier. Even when i do my weekly grocery shopping, the store I go to (Fryes) has a great set up. The bags are on a carousel type thing and they have a counter at the end to move bags or big items to so that you have more room to bag.
