Dragonflies, bluebirds, and peckers

. Monday, August 07, 2006

One thing I was thinking about the other day while walking my dog Sofie is the differences in wildlife between Virginia and Central New York. One thing is that I happen to notice a lot more dragonflies down here. I'm sure they're around in NY too but I seem to see a lot more around where I live. And they're usually pretty big.

Another animal that I see more of down here are bluebirds. That's ironic considering that the blue bird is the state bird of New York. I can honestly say that I don't think that I have ever seen a blue bird during the close to 30 years I've lived in NY.

Speaking of birds, the pileated wood pecker is another animal that I have never seen in New York. There's one guy that likes to peck at my eavestrough early in the morning. They are certainly very beautiful birds.

There's plenty of squirrels down here as in New York, but the squirrels down here do not have as bushy of tails.

Last but not least, there seems to be a bunch more bunny rabbits down here.

I love dragon flies boo, I notice them a lot while kayaking...all the different colours. We used to call them "darning needles" when I was young.

I rarely see blue birds unless I'm up in the Adirondacks.

You're right about the lightning bugs too. For some reason, I have noticed them more down here too.

Fireflies? Really? My parents have a ton of them. We have very few in NC. That's I've seen, anyway.
